A consolation build is possible, but the paid product's decisive value sits outside a solo rebuild. For Audible Premium Plus, organize and play legally owned audiobooks with bookmarks and local sync. The hard boundary is licensed audiobook catalog, credits, publisher relationships, narration rights, and apps, plus licensed content, rights, and distribution network.

# Audible Premium Plus indie build

## Goal

Build the smallest trustworthy replacement for the core Audible Premium Plus workflow for one developer or a tiny team.

## Scope

Organize legally owned audiobooks, play them with bookmarks, sync listening progress locally, and keep the library in a private user-owned store.

## Quick start

1. Install the documented dependencies.
2. Copy `.env.example` to `.env`.
3. Run the development command chosen during implementation.
4. Complete the acceptance checks in `BUILD_PLAN.md`.

## Honest limits

This build deliberately does not replace:
- licensed audiobook catalog, credits, publisher relationships, narration rights, and apps
- licensed music catalog
- royalty and distribution relationships
- global streaming infrastructure
- artist network and recommendations

If those capabilities are essential, use Navidrome instead of pretending the gap is solved.

why people still pay

People still pay for Audible Premium Plus because the product is the catalog, rights chain, and distribution network; a player or processing tool is only the visible edge. The recurring cost buys catalog licensing, royalties, identity, content delivery, moderation, recommendations, payouts, codecs, and rights disputes, not just the visible interface.
