The core loop is buildable, but a dependable replacement becomes a real weekend or multi-day project. For Axiom, ingest bounded logs, search them, and retain a compact local event store. The hard boundary is high-performance cloud storage, query engine, integrations, and managed operations, plus independent infrastructure and reliable alerting.

# Axiom indie build

## Goal

Build the smallest trustworthy replacement for the core Axiom workflow for one developer or a tiny team.

## Scope

Ingest bounded logs and error events, search them, retain a compact local event store, alert through one channel, and publish an honest status page.

## Quick start

1. Install the documented dependencies.
2. Copy `.env.example` to `.env`.
3. Run the development command chosen during implementation.
4. Complete the acceptance checks in `BUILD_PLAN.md`.

## Honest limits

This build deliberately does not replace:
- high-performance cloud storage, query engine, integrations, and managed operations
- global probe network
- phone and SMS delivery
- massive retention
- advanced incident response and support

If those capabilities are essential, use Uptime Kuma instead of pretending the gap is solved.

why people still pay

People still pay for Axiom because monitoring must continue working during the exact outage it reports, which makes independent infrastructure and alert delivery the real product. The recurring cost buys probe geography, clocks, retries, deduplication, sampling, storage, paging, notification delivery, on-call rules, and its own uptime, not just the visible interface.

questions
Vibecode Axiom

Kinda. The core of Axiom is buildable in a weekend with the prompt on this page, but there are real gaps: high-performance cloud storage, query engine, integrations, and managed operations, global probe network. Read the honest list above before committing.

How much does Axiom cost?

Axiom costs about $25/month (Personal, checked 2026-07-31), which is $300 per year.

What do I lose by replacing Axiom?

Honestly: high-performance cloud storage, query engine, integrations, and managed operations; global probe network; phone and SMS delivery; massive retention; advanced incident response and support. If any of those are load-bearing for you, keep paying.

Is there an open-source alternative to Axiom?

Yes: OpenObserve (Logs, traces and metrics in one binary; your disk gets the invoice.) HyperDX (A searchable event store with traces and dashboards attached; ClickHouse does the lifting.) VictoriaLogs (A fast log store and query UI; metrics and traces are somebody else's problem.) All 3 curated free alternatives are at vibecodeit.com/axiom/alternatives.
