A consolation build is possible, but the paid product's decisive value sits outside a solo rebuild. For Livestorm, run a small browser webinar with registrations and a simple replay page. The hard boundary is global media, email delivery, engagement, integrations, analytics, and reliability, plus real-time media infrastructure and reliability.

# Livestorm indie build

## Goal

Build the smallest trustworthy replacement for the core Livestorm workflow for one developer or a tiny team.

## Scope

Run a small browser webinar with registrations, issue signed room links, publish a simple replay page, and keep recordings only when every participant is clearly informed.

## Quick start

1. Install the documented dependencies.
2. Copy `.env.example` to `.env`.
3. Run the development command chosen during implementation.
4. Complete the acceptance checks in `BUILD_PLAN.md`.

## Honest limits

This build deliberately does not replace:
- global media, email delivery, engagement, integrations, analytics, and reliability
- global low-latency media network
- dial-in and telephony
- large webinars
- transcription, support, and compliance

If those capabilities are essential, use Jitsi Meet instead of pretending the gap is solved.

why people still pay

People still pay for Livestorm because video products survive because real-time media quality and global reliability are infrastructure businesses, not weekend interface projects. The recurring cost buys TURN capacity, codecs, browsers, packet loss, scaling, recording, consent, abuse, monitoring, and incident response, not just the visible interface.

Not really. Livestorm's value is not the code: Recheck price before merge. See the honest breakdown above.

How much does Livestorm cost?

Livestorm costs about $100/month (Pro, 400 attendee credits/year, checked 2026-08-12), which is $1200 per year.

What do I lose by replacing Livestorm?

Honestly: global media, email delivery, engagement, integrations, analytics, and reliability; global low-latency media network; dial-in and telephony; large webinars; transcription, support, and compliance. If any of those are load-bearing for you, keep paying.

Is there an open-source alternative to Livestorm?

Yes: Jitsi Meet (Widely deployed open-source video-conferencing platform.). Using prior art is also vibecoding; the prompt is for when you want it exactly your way.
