A personal launcher command or menubar utility is buildable, but Raycast's native polish, extension ecosystem, sync, AI, and Mac integration take serious product work.

# Raycast Pro indie build

## Goal

Build the smallest trustworthy replacement for the core Raycast Pro workflow for one developer or a tiny team.

## Scope

Build a command palette with local commands, clipboard history, snippets, and LLM shortcuts.

## Quick start

1. Install the documented dependencies.
2. Copy `.env.example` to `.env`.
3. Run the development command chosen during implementation.
4. Complete the acceptance checks in `BUILD_PLAN.md`.

## Honest limits

This build deliberately does not replace:
- extension ecosystem
- store/discovery
- native speed
- cloud sync
- team/shared snippets
- polished AI commands

If those capabilities are essential, use Ulauncher instead of pretending the gap is solved.

why people still pay

They pay because the launcher is a daily OS layer; latency and polish matter a lot.

Vibecode Raycast Pro

Kinda. The core of Raycast Pro is buildable in a weekend with the prompt on this page, but there are real gaps: extension ecosystem, store/discovery. Read the honest list above before committing.

How much does Raycast Pro cost?

Raycast Pro costs about $10/month (Pro, checked 2026-08-07), which is $120 per year.

What do I lose by replacing Raycast Pro?

Honestly: extension ecosystem; store/discovery; native speed; cloud sync; team/shared snippets; polished AI commands. If any of those are load-bearing for you, keep paying.

Is there an open-source alternative to Raycast Pro?

Yes: SuperCmd v1 (The still-maintained open-source v1 runs Raycast-style extensions, clipboard, snippets, windows, and bring-your-own AI.) Raycast Free (Raycast without Pro: the launcher survives, and AI works only if you bring the model or key.) The prompt is for when you want it exactly your way.
