A consolation build is possible, but the paid product's decisive value sits outside a solo rebuild. For Playground AI, create a local generation gallery with prompt history, masks, and reruns. The hard boundary is proprietary editing models, hosted compute, moderation, and fast iteration, plus frontier models, compute, and data.

# Playground AI indie build

## Goal

Build the smallest trustworthy replacement for the core Playground AI workflow for one developer or a tiny team.

## Scope

Create a local generation gallery with prompt history, masks, and reruns, submit jobs to a user-owned model server, and keep outputs reproducible.

## Quick start

1. Install the documented dependencies.
2. Copy `.env.example` to `.env`.
3. Run the development command chosen during implementation.
4. Complete the acceptance checks in `BUILD_PLAN.md`.

## Honest limits

This build deliberately does not replace:
- proprietary editing models, hosted compute, moderation, and fast iteration
- frontier proprietary models
- hosted GPU capacity
- licensed training data
- moderation and fast global delivery

If those capabilities are essential, use ComfyUI instead of pretending the gap is solved.

why people still pay

People still pay for Playground AI because the product value is the model and compute fleet, not the prompt box around it. The recurring cost buys GPU procurement, model licensing, safety filters, queueing, storage, and rapid model replacement, not just the visible interface.

questions
Vibecode Playground AI

Not really. Playground AI's value is not the code: Recheck price before merge. See the honest breakdown above.

How much does Playground AI cost?

Playground AI costs about $15/month (Pro, checked 2026-07-31), which is $180 per year.

What do I lose by replacing Playground AI?

Honestly: proprietary editing models, hosted compute, moderation, and fast iteration; frontier proprietary models; hosted GPU capacity; licensed training data; moderation and fast global delivery. If any of those are load-bearing for you, keep paying.

Is there an open-source alternative to Playground AI?

Yes: ComfyUI (Masks, history and deterministic reruns are all there; the gallery is less friendly than the graph.) InvokeAI (The exact local shape: gallery, prompt metadata, masks, canvas edits and one-click reruns.) Krita AI Diffusion (A real editor with masks, job history and local reruns, not merely a generation feed.) All 7 curated free alternatives are at vibecodeit.com/playground-ai/alternatives.
